Welcome, Gentle Readers…

Marilyn McEntyre
This is a year of discernment and transition. Since leaving full-time teaching at Westmont College last year, I am back in the Bay Area, still affiliated with Westmont as a fellow of the Gaede Institute for the Liberal Arts, and also . . .

WRITING - My book Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies is now out from Eerdmans, available from Eerdmans.com or Amazon. I’ve done several reviews and articles for The Christian Century, Sojourners, Prism, and Weavings, and have finished a draft of An American Sermon: Scripture Reconsidered in The Scarlet Letter. I’m also working on a book called Patient Poets about the role of poetry in healing.

TEACHING - In new places! This fall I’ll be teaching a course on medicine in literature, an interdisciplinary course in “Biology for Everybody” at Mills College, and am planning some short courses for the “Seminary in the Street” run by First Congregational Church in Oakland. Next spring I hope and expect to be teaching courses for New College (an affiliate of the GTU in Berkeley) and for the UCSF/UCB Joint Medical Program.

LEADING RETREATS - I’ve been delighted by opportunities to gather with groups of women, students, families, or adult ed groups for two- to five-day retreats, and to help structure those times for learning, reflection, renewal and relaxation. See the “Retreats” page for topics.
